To install a WordPress plugin you just need to put the plugin files into the “wp-content/plugins” directory. Once a plugin is installed, you may activate it or deactivate it from your WordPress Dashboard.
How to Install a WordPress Plugin (3 Ways)
There are three ways to install WordPress plugins on your blog:
- Search and install (Simple)
- Upload and install (Drug & Drop)
- Install using FTP (Manually)

1. Search & Install WordPress Plugins
It is the simplest way to install a plugin. If you know the name of the plugin which you want to install then you can directly search from the dashboard and install it.
The only downside of this method is that a plugin (which you want to install) must be in the WordPress plugin directory.
Step 1: First, Login to your WordPress Dashboard and click on Plugins > Add New. Then type your plugin name into the search box.
You’ll see a screen like the one in the screenshot above. Make sure you check that the plugin is compatible with your current version of WordPress.
Step 2: Simply click on “Install Now” and then “activate” the plugin.
Without active the plugin it will not work. So, Make sure you active the plugin.
That’s all, you have successfully installed a WordPress plugin.
Finally, configure the plugin as per your need from plugin setting page. Much of the time, we make the mistake of installing plugins without properly configuring them. So, must configure the plugin after install.
2. Upload and install (Drug & Drop)
If you have downloaded a WordPress plugin from somewhere (3rd Party or WordPress Plugin Page), Just upload the .zip file and install it directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Paid WordPress plugins are not listed in the WordPress plugin directory. So, you cannot installed those plugins using the first method.
Follow this method. We will show you how to install WordPress plugins using the upload option in the WordPress admin area.
Step 1: First, you need to download the plugin from the source which will be a .zip file.
Step 2: Login to your WordPress Dashboard and click on Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
Just Drug & Drop .zip file or choose the file from downloaded file location and click on Install Now. Once installed, you need to click on the Activate Plugin.
Finally, Configure the plugin and start using.
3. Manually Install a WordPress Plugin using FTP
It is the best and safe way to install a WordPress plugin. We recommend this FTP method. It is very useful when you can’t install a WP plugin using the WordPress dashboard.
Simply download the plugin from the WordPress plugin library or 3rd party plugin site, It’ll be a .zip file. You need to extract the zip file on your computer. Next upload it to your WordPress plugin directory (path /wp-content/plugins/) using your FTP software.
Once you are successfully upload the file, Goto WordPress plugins option (Plugins > Installed Plugins) in the WordPress dashboard and activate the plugin.
Upon activating, you may need to configure the plugin settings from plugin setting page.
This is a very useful method for those users who don’t have access to installing plugins from the WordPress dashboard due to server restriction.
